Waste management facilities — including transfer stations, landfills, and processing facilities — require approval under the Activities Designation Regulations.[3] If you operate a transfer yard or processing facility in addition to hauling, you will need an approval from Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change.

Transporters of dangerous goods must comply with the Dangerous Goods Management Regulations, which adopt federal Transportation of Dangerous Goods requirements and add provincial storage and handling standards.[4]

Municipal and regional requirements

Nova Scotia's seven regional waste management regions each set their own hauler requirements through bylaws. Commercial haulers must typically register with the regional authority and ensure source-separated waste is maintained in a source-separated condition during transport and deposited at the appropriate facility.
